It’s simple; a diet containing plenty of calcium is something you can “feel in your bones” – calcium is one of the main nutrients involved in helping bones thrive. Silk Plus for Bone Health provides 40% of the daily value of calcium in just one cup; that’s 30% more than dairy milk.1 It also contains 30% of the recommended amount of vitamin D along with a boost of beneficial NutraFlora®, which helps calcium absorption.2

How Much Calcium?
Throughout our lives, a calcium-rich diet plays a part in maintaining bone health.4 According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, women accrue 98% of their bone mass by age 20.5 Once a person hits the age of 30, they begin to lose bone density — making calcium just as important. The recommended intake for calcium for the average adult is 1,000 mg per day.
The 2004 Surgeon General’s report on bone health and osteoporosis states that half of all Americans over 50 will have weak bones by 2020 unless they make changes in diet and lifestyle. The report suggests people can improve their bone health by getting enough calcium, vitamin D and physical activity.4
Calcium Absorption and NutraFlora®
While getting enough calcium is fundamental, the body’s ability to absorb this valuable mineral is equally important. Research suggests that the calcium found in Silk® soymilk is just as absorbable as that found in dairy milk.6 Silk Plus for Bone Health also includes NutraFlora, a natural fiber and prebiotic that has been shown to enhance the body’s ability to absorb calcium.2
Each serving of Silk Plus for Bone Health contains 1 gram of NutraFlora and extra calcium, creating an effective team to help deliver optimum bone health benefits. That’s two great reasons to savor the delicious nutrition of Silk Plus for Bone Health!

Absolutely! Like all of our Silk products, our Silk Plus DHA Omega-3, Silk Plus Fiber and Silk Plus for Bone Health are vegetarian. In fact, Silk soy products are not made with any animal products; they are purely vegan. Additionally, all of our Silk products are made with soybeans that have not been genetically modified.
Whole soy foods provide naturally occurring omega-3 essential fatty acids. Since Silk is made from high-quality, non-GMO whole soybeans, Silk products contain these omega-3s. Given the supportive research on the benefits of omega-3 DHA in particular, 100% vegetarian omega-3 DHA has been added to Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA.
Omega-3s are fatty acids, which have been studied for their role in health and well-being. ALA is an essential omega-3 fatty acid, meaning that it must be included in the diet for optimal health. Common sources of ALA include soybeans, flaxseed and walnuts. DHA is another type of omega-3 nutrient and has been studied for its role in heart, brain and eye health. Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA contains both naturally occurring ALA and added DHA from a natural vegetarian source.
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid. Although it is found in most tissues of the body, the highest concentrations of DHA are prevalent in the brain, nervous system and the retina of the eye. The more DHA is consumed in the diet, the more DHA is available for these tissues.
Although DHA is present in most tissues within the body, DHA accumulates at greatest concentrations within the brain, nervous system and retinal tissue of the eye. Therefore, it is recognized to play a role in supporting normal development in these areas. DHA has also been shown to help promote heart health.
A recent report from the Institute of Medicine (National Institutes of Health, 2005) has suggested that a healthy diet include 1,600 mg of ALA omega-3. Of that amount, they suggest that Americans consume 10% of their omega-3s in the form of DHA and EPA (a similar fatty acid). Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA contains 370 mg of ALA and 32 mg of DHA per serving.
DHA naturally occurs in fish, particular fatty fish. Salmon, herring, albacore and bluefin tuna, and whitefish are all good sources of DHA. The DHA used in our Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA is a vegetarian source derived from algae.
Whole soy foods provide fiber and Silk is made from high-quality, non-GMO whole soybeans. Silk Plus Fiber has fiber added to provide a total of 5 grams of dietary fiber per 8-ounce serving.
Fiber has also been shown to help promote healthy digestive function. Also, meals that include soluble fiber tend to slow down digestion, thereby delaying the absorption of glucose, a blood sugar. This can be helpful in normalizing blood sugar levels. Soluble fibers can also help to promote a feeling of “fullness,” resulting in reduced calorie intake — a big plus if you’re trying to lose weight. In addition, the presence of fiber in the diet may help promote healthy cholesterol levels.
The recommended amount of dietary fiber for a 2,000-calorie diet is 25 grams per day. Unfortunately, most Americans only consume about half of that amount. Silk Plus Fiber contains 5 grams of fiber per serving.
Other sources of dietary fiber include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dried fruits, oats, beans, peas and legumes, including soy. When beginning to add more fiber to your diet, it is wise to do so gradually and to drink plenty of fluids, allowing your body to ease into this new habit without digestive discomfort.
Definitely! All Silk products are fortified with calcium. Silk Plus for Bone Health adds even more of a nutritional boost, fortifying each serving with 40% of the recommended daily value of calcium plus 1 gram of NutraFlora®, which helps enhance calcium absorption.1
In scientific terms, NutraFlora is a “short chain fructooligosaccharide” — a dietary fiber found naturally in a variety of foods including bananas, barley, garlic, honey, onion and rye. NutraFlora is a prebiotic, meaning it acts as a food source for the flora (or probiotics) within the digestive tract. This interaction between pre- and probiotics encourages a natural, healthy balance within the digestive system, which in turn helps to enhance calcium absorption.1
Calcium is an important nutrient involved in bone health, bone density and the prevention of osteoporosis. Because calcium is a fundamental element in our skeletal system, getting enough of it is necessary to maintain healthy bones.
The recommended intake of calcium for adults is 1,000 mg/day. The chart below discusses the recommended amount of calcium for each age group.
