POOLE, DORSET — The USA head to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa full of hope after a good couple of years in qualifying for the tournament, they are getting stronger and stronger in the World game and will be looking to continue that improvement in South Africa. In 2002 the US went to the Quarter-Finals of the World Cup and that is a feat that they will be looking to match this summer, having said that they are not one of the favourites in the betting to win the tournament after being drawn in Group C which features England, Slovenia and Algeria. Fabio Capello and England will be wary of slipping up in their first game against the Americans despite being the clear favourites in the World Cup Betting, that is a measure of the respect the US have earned in recent years and a mark of their progress. The England v USA Betting offers hope that the Americans can pick up a point against England in the first Group C game they will then be in good stead ahead of their remaining two group games.

The two key games for the USA in Group C in South Africa will be the ones after the England game; they play Slovenia on the 18th June and then Algeria in their final group game on the 23rd June at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium. They will be looking to pick up three points there and improve on their performance at the last World Cup when they had somewhat of a disaster in Germany, they managed only one point from three games and they were on the first plane back to North America. That was below their expectations but they have bounced back since and as the 2010 FIFA World Cup Bets suggests they could prove dangerous outsiders in South Africa, any of the big teams including England in the first game will need to be wary of slipping up against a strong and experienced team such as the USA.

As my colleague and I sat and contemplated the perils of what may lie ahead with the news of Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers and AIG, my colleague clicked on a CNN website only to see the headline: “The Sky is Falling!” – shown with a picture of a stockbroker looking up at a tall Wall Street building, presumably about to collapse.

After we picked ourselves up off the floor in our uncomfortable laughter, we looked at each other and asked, does the work we do really matter now? Does anybody really care about shoplifting? In the scope of the problems facing citizens, businesses and communities, should anybody really care?

And as we came back from our momentary haze of gloom the answer was a resounding YES! Shoplifting is too important an economic and social issue to let it fall by the wayside, in good times or bad.  In fact, now more than ever is the time to address shoplifting especially for those typically honest kids and consumers who may be pushed by hardship to try their hand at it.

A recent NASP survey asked hundreds of judges, prosecutors, diversion, probation and law enforcement officers if they thought shoplifting was a Gateway Crime – “a crime with little or no consequence which acts as an initiator to other criminal behavior.”

79% of these justice professionals said “yes”, adding that in their experience shoplifting is a gateway to greater acts of shoplifting as well as more serious crime. And I should note that this number is up 7% in just 3 years; from 72% in 2005 to 79% in 2008.

What does this mean? I’m not 100% certain. What I do know is that in the scope of criminal activity in communities, addressing shoplifting has fallen quite low on the totem pole. But if in the opinion of justice professionals across the nation, shoplifting is often the starting point to future criminal behavior – employee theft, burglary, robbery, fraud, embezzlement, ORC – the importance of proactively addressing shoplifting becomes much clearer.

One way criminal and juvenile justice professionals are addressing the shoplifting problem is by utilizing shoplifting offender education programs provided by NASP to reduce delinquents’ propensity for repeat offenses. Over the last 7 to 10 years education programs have become widely accepted and utilized by court systems as a mechanism to handle non-professional shoplifting offenders. The justice community has found offender-paid education programs a cost-effective mechanism to effectively handle these cases.

While this method for addressing shoplifting has been proven effective in court documented studies, its downfall is that it can only be utilized by criminal justice when and if retailers apprehend and prosecute offenders. This is not to say that every retailer must apprehend and prosecute all shoplifters in their stores in order to effectively address shoplifting. That is simply not practical or even true.

Today, there are many effective actions retailers can take which do not require prosecution. For example, retailers are the only stakeholders in the shoplifting problem that can identify offenders and therefore, have a unique opportunity to distribute parent support or education pamphlets to youthful or consumer offenders at apprehension to help reduce repeat offenses.

In addition, community members look to retailers as the victims, to give them the barometer of how “big a deal” shoplifting really is in their local community. As a local retailer you can set the tone for community action. Shoplifting and other criminal activity will always rise to the level acceptable to the community.

When retailers are proactive in addressing shoplifting it sends an important message to community members and offenders that criminal behavior, on any level, will not be tolerated in your store or community and that no crime, however small, pays. There are many ways that a retail company or individual employee can be pro-active in helping to reduce the shoplifting problem even when they don’t prosecute as a rule. It can be done at little or no cost and it can be as simple as:

• Distributing Parent Support Pamphlets to the parents of youth apprehended in your stores
• Volunteering to serve on local court-sponsored victim impact panels, community boards and teen courts
• Utilizing community awareness posters to provide public awareness and education about shoplifting prevention
• Hosting awareness training for criminal & juvenile justice professionals
• Offering the courts the opportunity to have offenders participate in a security tour of your store
• Volunteering to speak at local crime prevention classes
• Helping to fund local law enforcement or justice agency shoplifter education programs
• Supporting local and/or national shoplifting prevention campaigns

While these initiatives may seem “out of the box” compared to mainstream LP initiatives, we must not disregard the impact that these actions have in reducing crime in the community. Restorative Justice Principles state that when “community norms denounce harmful behavior it reinforces productive behavior;” and that the more connected a potential offender feels to their community, the more likely they are to restrain impulses that would be disapproved by the community.

In this waning economy, where NASP has already seen a nationwide increase in referrals of consumer shoplifting offenders and where loss prevention departments are being directed to find creative ways to reduce losses on less of a budget, it seems that these simple yet effective initiatives’ time has come.

Search engines dislike duplicate content for a few reasons. One is that major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask aim to provide searchers with a diverse cross-section of unique content, and duplicate content often results in duplicate listings that impair the searcher’s experience. Another reason is that search engines don’t want to spend the resources (bandwidth) on indexing pages that are very similar.

In some instances, pages containing duplicate content are filtered at the time search engine results are sorted, so there is no guarantee as to which version of a page will appear in results and which won’t. Duplicate content may even hinder some sites and web pages from getting indexed by search engines, and there are some cases in which a search engine crawler will stop indexing all of the pages of a site because it finds too many copies of the same pages under different URLs.

While content duplication is sometimes used in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings to garner more website traffic, in most cases it occurs without ill intent on behalf of the site owner or webmaster. The following is a list of duplicate content scenarios that could be burdening your site.

Scenario #1: Ecommerce sites that include product descriptions from manufacturers, producers, and publishers

Product distribution websites often use text from the manufacturer or producer of the product as a description for the item on their own pages. With the addition of the product name, creator, manufacturer, writer, or recording artist appearing on the page, there is a considerable amount of duplicate content on pages that don’t originate from the same website. Here are some examples:

Scenario #2: Printer-friendly pages

Many sites offer “printer friendly” versions of their content on different pages. Without the application of robots.txt disallow statements or meta “noindex” tags on these pages to keep search engines from indexing them, they may be indexed as duplicate content. See these samples:

Scenario #3: Websites that create session IDs

A session ID lets you create customized applications for a more personalized user experience, thus increasing the appeal of your website. A visitor to your site would be assigned a unique session ID which is either stored in a cookie on the user side or is propagated in the URL.

Websites with session IDs serve information in their URLs to track visitors as they go through the pages of that site. When search engine crawlers detect this tracking information they may index the same page several times under different URLs. A good example of this is www.staples.com.

Search engine guidelines advise you to allow bots or spiders to crawl your sites without session IDs that track their path through the site. While this technique is great for tracking individual user behavior, the access pattern of bots is entirely different. Since bots cannot always decipher URLs that look different but point to the same page, the use of session IDs may result in incomplete indexing of your site.

Scenario #4: URLs that include multiple data variables

When multiple data variables exist within a URL, this causes bots to crawl and index the same page under different URLs. Here are some examples of sites that show different data variables in their URLs.

It is difficult for a search engine bot or spider to crawl the URLs listed above. If this scenario applies to your website, you may want to implement the mod-re-write server settings.

Scenario #5: Pages sharing similar elements

Some websites have elements that are very common from one page to another, such as title, meta descriptions, headings, navigation, and text that is shared sitewide. This can be a problem since bots might consider it to be duplicate content. Beware of this scenario if you own an ecommerce site that includes your brand name and information about that brand in every title on every page of your site. In addition, the use of content management systems that do not allow for distinct meta description tags to be placed on each page of a website can cause a similar dilemma.

Here are two well-known websites that use their brand names on every page:

These five scenarios represent situations in which search engine crawlers may perceive your website to have duplicate content. Although it is probably inadvertent on your part, you should take steps to resolve these issues to ensure that all of your web pages are properly indexed on the search engines.

NEW YORK – David Letterman, days after revealing on air that he’d been sexually involved with women from his television program, apologized to his wife on Monday’s “Late Show,” saying she had been “horribly hurt by my behavior” and stating flat-out those affairs “are in the past.”

The CBS late-night host, building on Thursday’s startling confessional, vowed to repair his relationship with his wife, Regina Lasko, whom he married in March after a years-long courtship.

“Let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me,” he said ruefully.

As Letterman faced Monday’s show, and the shows that will come after, it was clear that how he deals with his messy situation could prove to be a defining chapter in his long TV career. And, ironically, it could clinch his recent ratings victory in late-night TV.

His dilemma was Topic A on the show as he mixed wisecracks with contrition in a virtuoso balancing act. Noting the cool fall weather, he reported, “It’s chilly outside my house; chilly INSIDE my house.”

Then he cautioned the audience, “This is only Phase 1 of the scandal. Phase 2: Next week I go on ‘Oprah’ and sob.”

A bit later, guest Steve Martin gave Letterman his kidding consolation: “It proves that you’re a human being. And we weren’t really that sure before.”

Martin Short, making an unannounced appearance, playfully plopped himself in Martin’s lap.

“You spend one more minute on his lap, you’re gonna get blackmailed,” Letterman quipped.

Monday’s show was the first Letterman had taped since Thursday, when he disclosed that he had had sexual relationships with women who worked for him and said that he had been the victim of a $2 million blackmail threat.

During the hour, he also apologized to his staff, which, he said, had been subjected to “being browbeaten and humiliated” by reporters since his revelations.

“My thanks to the staff for, once again, putting up with something stupid I’ve gotten myself involved in,” he said.

Letterman, 62, began dating Lasko in 1986, and they have a son, Harry, who was born in November 2003. All the affairs took place before Letterman’s marriage, said Tom Keaney, spokesman for Letterman’s production company, Worldwide Pants.

Letterman arrived on stage Monday to applause and cheers from his studio audience. After drinking it in, he grinned sheepishly and inquired, with a mock stammer, “Did your, did your weekend just fly by?”

After pausing for the audience’s sympathetic laughter, he went on: “I mean, I’ll be honest with you folks — right now, I would give anything to be hiking on the Appalachian Trail.”

“I got into the car this morning,” he added, “and the navigation lady wasn’t speaking to me. Ouch.”

In a more somber display, Letterman voiced his mea culpas. Regarding his wife, he said that, “if you hurt a person and it’s your responsibility, you try to fix it.”

Letterman has offered no specifics about how many women he had sex with.

But the CBS producer accused of blackmailing Letterman used pages from a former assistant’s diary that described an affair with the “Late Show” host, a law enforcement official said Monday. The ex-assistant, Stephanie Birkitt, went to live with CBS News producer Robert Halderman, who found her diary describing her relationship with Letterman and used it to help blackmail him, the law enforcement official said Monday on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.

Halderman, a producer for the true-crime show “48 Hours Mystery,” pleaded not guilty last week to extortion charges.

The flood of attention on Letterman was inevitable, and the way he initially dealt with this maelstrom recalled an embarrassing dilemma for another star in 1995.

For a celebrity the caliber of Hugh Grant, publicity — including speculation of career suicide — was unavoidable when he was arrested with a prostitute on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip 14 years ago. But then he retreated to NBC’s “The Tonight Show” to try to explain.

Host Jay Leno wasted no time before asking an instant classic of a question: “What the hell were you thinking?!”

Grant’s appearance provided him with some needed image rehab. It also vaulted ratings runner-up “Tonight” past Letterman’s “Late Show,” a leadership position Leno held through his retirement from late night earlier this year.

Since then, Letterman has reclaimed a ratings edge over new “Tonight” host Conan O’Brien.

And now he may have truly sealed the deal. Beloved by viewers and critics for decades, he has abruptly freshened the enduring Letterman brand and demonstrated he still has the ability to surprise even fans who thought they knew him well.

Indeed, a legendary late-night host has nothing but praise for Letterman’s skill at crisis management.

But it isn’t the first time Letterman has shown finesse in managing a firestorm.

In June, he had a run-in with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin over jokes made at the expense of her teenage daughter. He emerged from a tumultuous few days of protests and demands for his dismissal with a ratings jolt. And thanks to the dumb-luck timing of the flap, he also handily upstaged his much-hyped NBC rival just as O’Brien was taking over as “Tonight” host.

Letterman apologized to Palin and her family in what became another one of his memorable performances. But he has never stopped making jokes at Palin’s expense — including yet another apology to her on Monday’s show, just for good measure.

Twenty-eight students at a Queens parochial school have confirmed cases of the potentially lethal swine flu, with 17 others likely having the illness, New York City’s mayor said Monday.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg emphasized that St. Francis Prep in Fresh Meadows appears to be the only cluster of the virus in the city.

“We are still dealing with a single cluster,” Bloomberg said at a news conference.

The 28 students confirmed to have swine flu are improving, Bloomberg said.

None of the cases are severe, officials said.

The mayor said that “probably” more than 100 students from the school have the virus.

St. Francis Prep announced it will be closed Monday and Tuesday “because of the number of students with flu-like symptoms,” according to the school’s Web site.

The swine flu is suspected in the deaths of 149 people in Mexico. Mexican Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said only 20 of the deaths have been confirmed to be from swine flu and the government was awaiting test results on the rest.

Health officials say of the 40 confirmed cases in the United States all those sickened have recovered or are in the process of recovering.

Nassau officials said they have one suspected case and test results for eight Suffolk residents were negative.

The one case of suspected swine flu in Nassau may not be confirmed by the state, Nassau Commissioner of Health Dr. Maria Torroella Carney said Monday.

“The young adult we suspect of having the swine flu had only mild symptoms and has been sent home,” she said. “The state told us today that it was prioritizing the cases it would test, starting with the most severe first. There are a lot of other cases around the state, so we don’t know when it will get to ours.”

The commissioner said her office is preparing for more cases of the disease.

“Some of our residents attend St. Francis Prep School, and we know it [swine flu] is in the metropolitan area. So we’re in touch with schools and hospitals on a daily basis, trying to get a better picture of what is going on in Nassau.”

President Barack Obama said Monday there was concern but not yet “a cause for alarm.”

A travel advisory was being prepared suggesting Americans not travel to Mexico, the center of the outbreak.

One of the confirmed cases involved Esti Lamonaca, 18, of Forest Hills, a senior at St. Francis Prep, health officials told The Associated Press.

Lamonaca said she began feeling ill two days after she and 11 friends returned from a spring break trek to Cancun, Mexico.

She said she had been unaware of the swine flu outbreak in Mexico until friends called her Friday afternoon to tell her – and she then went on the Internet and realized she had the symptoms.

She told Newsday that officials at North Shore- Long Island Jewish Hospital said she “probably” had swine flu.

“I never had such a high fever – 103,” Lamonaca said. “That was scary.”

Late last week students began overwhelming the nurse’s office at St. Francis Prep, complaining of fever, nausea, sore throats and achy bones. The nurse notified the New York City Health Department – and when more students reported being sick Friday, the health department dispatched a team to the school.

Officials said that team got caught in traffic and didn’t arrive at St. Francis until 3:30 p.m., just as classes were being dismissed for the weekend.

Brother Leonard Conway, principal of St. Francis, said only a handful of students were still around and that eight of them promptly tested positive.

Some of those infected had recently visited Mexico.

Nassau Health Commissioner Maria Torroella Carney said the county’s suspected case involves a person who had traveled to Mexico recently and had mild symptoms.

Tests on flu swabs for eight Suffolk residents returned from the state lab in Albany negative for the swine flu, officials said.

In response to the outbreak, roughly 12 million doses of the antiviral drug Tamiflu will be moved from a federal stockpile to where states can quickly get it, Napolitano said.

Meanwhile, cleaning crews spent Sunday scrubbing down the building at St. Francis.

“I haven’t been out of my house since Wednesday and am just hoping to make a full recovery soon,” Lamonaca told The Associated Press. “I am glad school is closed because it supposedly is very contagious, and I don’t want this to spread like it has in Mexico.”

Some schools in Texas, California and Ohio also were closing after students were found or suspected to have the flu.

The outbreak has people on edge across the country.

Officials along the U.S.-Mexico border asked health care providers to take respiratory samples from patients who appear to have the flu. Travelers were being asked if they visited flu-stricken areas.

The St. Francis Prep Web site is asking faculty – as well as students – to take a “Flu Survey.”
