| Long Island is the largest and longest island in the United States. A large body of water, the Peconic Bay, splits the eastern end to form two narrow peninsulas, commonly referred to as two forks. At Montauk, the extreme tip of the South Fork, the northern side opens to the waters of Block Island Sound with the Atlantic Ocean on the southern side. |

directions from points westThe Long Island Expressway is the most popular route if you are driving from Long Island, New York City or points west. Take the LIE to exit 70, heading south on Manorville road for about 5 miles to Route 27 East. 27 East changes in Southampton from a major highway to a local road, and passes through several villages until it finally comes to Montauk. The Long Island Railroad and the Hampton Jitney provide service from New York City. |
directions from new englandFrom New England, you can take the Cross Sound Ferry to Orient Point, and then drive to Montauk. This trip is extremely charming if you drive through the old port town of Greenport, take the North Ferry to Shelter Island, and the South Ferry from Shelter Island to North Haven, drive through the old whaling town of Sag Harbor, and then take the local roads to Montauk. There is also high speed passenger only ferry service on the Viking Fleet, that runs from New London, Connecticut to the Viking Dock in Montauk on Fridays and Sundays only, in season. The ferry leaves New London on Fridays at 8:30pm and Sundays at 9:30pm, returning from Montauk Fridays at 6:30pm and Sundays at 7:30pm. Travel time is approximately one hour. No reservations are needed. This ferry operates from Memorial Day until Labor Day. www.vikingfleet.com. |
general informationWhat to Wear – Montauk, much more casual and laid back than the Hamptons, does require shoes and shirts at most stores and restaurants, but very few require jackets and ties. Walking shoes and athletic clothes are a must. Nights can be chilly–pack a warm sweatshirt or sweater, even in the summer. Those Montauk breezes make you feel cool, but you still need a high SPF sunblock, even on a cloudy day. Climate – Summer temperatures average in the upper 70s by day, going down to the high 60s to low 70s by night. Prevailing winds from the Southwest keep even the higher temperatures comfortable. Water temperatures average in the 70’s in summer. Spring arrives late due to the ocean’s moderating effect on temperature, which also causes fall to linger into November and winters to be generally mild. Wi-Fi Access – Bring your computer for internet access at Gurney’s Inn on Old Montauk Highway, and in the Village at the Montauk Library, Lost Hope Lagoon, and 668 The Gig Shack. Many hotels and motels also provide internet access. Computer and INTERNET ACCESS –Available at the Montauk Library (668-3377). The Montauk Library – The award-winning building on Montauk Highway just east of the Village, offers reading rooms, gardens, computers, a theater, plus an upper level with spectacular ocean views. The library plans events throughout the year for adults and children. A nonresident card, valid for one year, costs $30. (668-3377) Churches– Montauk’s Roman Catholic Church, St. Therese of Lisieux, (668-2200) has Saturday night and Sunday morning masses. The Montauk Community Church (Protestant) holds Sunday morning services and hosts a summer bible school (668-2022). Call for times of services as they vary throughout the year. More churches and synagogues are found in the surrounding villages. ATM Machines are located at Suffolk County National Bank and Chase Bank in the Village, and Suffolk County National Bank in the Harbor. More Machines are found at businesses in Montauk. Movies – In Montauk, on Edgemere Road, (668-2393), and a multiplex in East Hampton (324-0448). Taxi – There are several taxi companies in Montauk, the largest is Lindy’s Taxi, 668-8888 Airport – The Montauk Airport is open to the public. Call 668-3738. Buses – Suffolk County Transit (852-5200) provides service year-round. The 10C bus travels a loop around Montauk, with a final stop at Newtown Lane in East Hampton. Although Montauk is known as a summer resort town, there are enough outdoor and indoor activities to draw visitor’s here year round. Here’s a list of our top six winter attractions:
Seal Walks at Montauk Point State Park- these guided walks, led by a naturalist, describe seal behavior along with coastal ecology. Our calendar section lists all these walks.
Birding – Our location on the Atlantic Flyway gives you the opportunity to see many migrating birds who pause here for wintering and migratory stopovers.
Hiking - Since about 70% of our land is parkland, there are miles of trails and roads through the parks. Take a guided hike with the East Hampton Trails Preservation Society (easthamptontrails.org) to learn more about the Montauk wilderness.
